Visuo

by Jordan Truong

The Visuo is a portable music device for the hearing-impaired that elevates the listening experience through both visual and tactile feedback.

Listen on the go. Enjoy a more accessible and holistic music experience on walks or when commuting on public transport.

As a supplementary music device, the Visuo is designed to be used alongside headphones, earphones, or hearing aids, and fits in the palm of your hand.

Inspired by the sleek flip phones of the 2000s, the controls are hidden from accidental activation and are revealed through a satisfying rotation mechanism.

Project Description

The experience of listening to music has been a fundamental human experience since prehistory, and in the modern era, advancements in audio technology allow us to experience it more intimately, wherever and whenever we want to. However, even with these advancements, the enjoyment of music listening for the hearing-impaired remains reduced when compared to those with non-impaired hearing.

Research-led design has been undertaken to create a new product working towards music-listening equity. The Visuo is a portable music visualiser for travellers, intended to enhance the immersiveness of music. The fully encompassing process for designing this product included research (literature reviews, user testing), rapid iteration (sketching, CAD modelling, sketch models, prototypes), and digital visualisation through Keyshot rendering.

The Visuo is a bold step into an untapped niche of portable music visualisation. With it, users are more capable of shaping their personal soundscape. The portability of the device allows users to fit it seamlessly into their everyday lives and assists users to feel the music, rather than simply hear it. Ultimately, the Visuo highlights that the way we experience music can always be enhanced and made more accessible for all listeners.

Feel the music. The Visuo converts audio signals into the vertical movement of the visualiser blocks for haptic feedback.

The Visuo is a fashion statement. It comes in a variety of bold colours so you can pick the one that best represents you.
