Ritual: a bedside product reshaping habits

Pouring out the 'brewed' notifications

Abstract

This project aims to reshape screen use habits within bedtime and wake-up routines through designing a three-dimensional bedside product that uses metaphor, sensory, and behavioural design. Device dependency among young people and adults has become a growing concern, negatively affecting both sleep quality and focus. Night-time phone use reduces sleep duration and delays sleep onset, while morning use causes overstimulation and decreased cognition. Although many people recognise these issues, they struggle to change their habits. Current market solutions are often passive, relying on personal discipline rather than addressing subconscious, ingrained behaviours.

The project explores how design can actively reshape these habits by providing intentional storage for the bedtime routine and a calmer, filtered delivery of notifications in the morning. The aim is to create a bedside companion that encourages positive routines and builds strong habits through reinforcement and rituals. Using a research-led approach, the design is grounded in evidence and reality. Research highlights the importance of consistency, gentle transitions, and sensory cues such as light and interactions in shaping routines. The proposed design is bedside product that leans into playful metaphor and interaction design to promote positive routine change. This project offers a different perspective on how design can promote healthier relationships with technology and redefine how we interact with our devices day to day.

Design Intent

Device dependency is a growing issue in today’s society, with unintentional phone use disrupting sleep and mental health. Evening use delays rest and disrupts recovery, leading to fatigue and reduced focus the next day. Over time, these effects compound, creating a cycle of poor rest and increased screen dependence. Despite growing awareness, meaningful personal change remains difficult.

Ritual is a bedside product that reshapes phone habits within bedtime and wake up routines. It offers an intentional alternative for overnight phone storage and provides a filtered notification system through sensory interaction, metaphor, behavioural design. The product emphasises consistency, gentle transitions, and playful interactions inspired by a familiar and comforting ritual of coffee making.

However, Ritual is more than a product design that encourages habit change. It is a wider dialogue around designing for change and act as a commentary on technologies impact on us and society.

Bio

I am an Industrial Designer with an interest with the understated: the mundane, nostalgic, and subtle elements of design. My work explores the intersection between form and function, blending aesthetics with purpose. I believe good design should be harmonious with its context, becoming almost invisible yet powerfully active. I also like cats!
