Project Description

Normans, designed by James Power, Jordan Truong, and Harriet Lindsay, is a modular children's gumboot concept designed around the idea that a great product should grow alongside its user. Developed initially as a group project, the brief centred on creating a sustainable, durable boot that could adapt to a child's changing needs, reducing waste by extending the product's lifespan rather than replacing it entirely.

The design is built on a system of interchangeable components. Soles can be swapped to suit different activities, offering enhanced grip for outdoor terrain or added comfort for everyday wear, while the upper sections upgrade in size as the child develops. This modularity also enables three distinct wear configurations: a breathable summer boot, a full-height gumboot for wet and muddy conditions, and a low-cut version for casual use. Transitions between configurations are managed through a swappable lock mechanism, keeping the system intuitive for both children and parents.

Personalisation sits at the heart of the concept. A range of colour combinations allows children to make the boot their own, encouraging a sense of ownership that further supports long-term use.

Following the original submission, the project was revisited to refine the visual presentation, reworking textures, lighting, and material finishes to communicate the concept with greater realism and clarity. This process deepened both my technical rendering skills and my understanding of how visual storytelling shapes the way a design is received.

Normans reflects a belief that thoughtful, adaptable design can make sustainability feel natural rather than like a compromise.

Bringing together a shared interest in sustainable and user-centred design, James Power, Jordan Truong, and Harriet Lindsay developed Normans as a collaborative exploration of how modular design can extend product lifespan and reduce waste. Each member contributed to the concept's development, from initial research and ideation through to the refined final product.
