Project Description
As the world has become increasingly urbanised, there needs to be more space for people to detach from their daily rituals and environments. We all know the world is becoming increasingly urbanised with the effects being less and less space individuals can immerse themselves into to reconnect or detach from modern life. The constant visual stimuli of flashing lights or billboards trying to grab your attention, as well as the loud and droning noises, have created a mentally noisy environment that can be very overstimulating. Oftentimes, people use technology to distract themselves by binge-watching content. The simple act of reaching for your phone to distract yourself from your environmental stressors dismisses the emotions you feel in the moment and leads to dormant emotions. This cycle of exposure to environmental stressors, mental distress, and avoidant emotional management mechanisms is a cycle that is very familiar to people in urban environments.
Daydream aims to solve this by using a portable head-mounted device that creates an immersive, isolated environment. This is achieved through a mask and active noise-cancelling earcups. Once isolated, Daydream introduces visual stimuli through the LED matrix inside the mask, positioned so it is out of the user’s focal distance to create a smooth gradient. Whilst visuals are displayed on the LED matrix display, audio is played through the earcups to create a positive environment. By introducing both stimuli, the user can detach from their busy and overstimulating environment, promoting relaxation and better mental well-being.
Designed to be ergonomic, Daydream was extensively tested across a wide range of users.
