Ripple: Smart Focus System

by Phan Chao

The final of Ripple. Integrating ‘ripple effect’ in the design and the lighting by projecting light through wavy glass textured onto the wall

Project Description

Following the ever-rising smartphone addiction, people find it harder to concentrate. Switching between their phones and the tasks in hand reduces their ability to focus. Research suggests that it can take up to 23 minutes for a person to refocus after checking their phone. It uses up their attentional resources and reduces their cognitive capacity.

In response to the problem, Ripple is designed to increase focus and productivity by eliminating smartphone usage during work sessions. A brilliant on-wall sound and lighting system that elevates the working environment by creating a relaxing and immersive sensation through light and sound helps users get into a deep and uninterrupted concentration. The design embraces the ripple effect in its form and functions to create a calm and peaceful surrounding. The generation of ‘ripple’ by projecting wavy ambient light and the immersive sound enhances cognitive skills while improving brain function. Creating a ritual by starting Ripple every time users want to work triggers concentration through cognitive association.

The system uses a smartphone as an activator and retains it inside the slot to keep the users from distractions during the focus period. Ripple app offers different focus methods and customisable music and light settings to fit various working styles. Users get personalised notifications for messages and phone calls through colour emissive LED. A built-in infrared sensor lets users take phone calls, pause, or play the timer and music using different hand gestures. The product studies how habits are formed by tracking usage and analysing patterns to find their most productive periods.
